Abu dhabi does not have many chinese outlets with Indo-chinese taste and good quality so Shanghai surprise is definitely a landing station each time i crave for indo-chinese. Crispy corns, veg and chicken satay, chicken kung pao are my regular starters. Peking duck is nice too. Chilly chicken, veg manchurian, noodles are all to drool over. I wish they improve the mocktails as they are lil underwhelming. Staff is super nice.

If you love authentic Chinese, Shanghai surprise is the place for you!! The menu is vast and one has a lot of options to choose from. There is ample choice for the vegetarians also. The sizzlers and mains are extremely fulfilling. The brownie sizzler ice cream is also a must try. The staff is friendly and the ambience is very relaxing. Would recommend this place for everyone. A perfect family outing!

Shanghai Surprise is truly a good surprise with a great variety of Asian cuisine. I like their 8 jewel soup. Although the sizzlers tasted good, I still feel there was a lack of sizzling effect which was a bit disappointing. Their vegetable Manchurian was amazing with fried rice.
I had celebrated my birthday here and to my surprise, the staff got me a small ice cream cake, which was adorable and I absolutely loved it. The ambience is amazing - very quiet and calm with soothing music and the staff are friendly and sweet.Highly recommend trying this restaurant atleast once.

I am not the one to judge whether the food was authentic Chinese cuisine or not, but it was the best Chinese food i have ever had in recent times. We ordered chopsuey, with mixed hakka noodles, dumplings. Loved it.
Great food; wonderful customer service, lovely ambiance. The Thai Curry and American Chopsuey were fantastic. Highly recommended for business lunch.
I was quite skeptical when I entered the restaurant since I was getting wired vibes. How ever I decided to give it a try since I have heard pretty good reviews from my friend who is regular visitor . I had ordered red wine, fried rice and veg Manchurian and corn starters can’t recall the exact name . Veg Manchurian was average since I don’t have a taste for typical Chinese Chinese food . Am more of an indo Chinese cuisine lover . But the starters was amazing. My friend had order honey glazed chicken and beef curry. The beef was a disaster but the honey glazed chicken turned out to be super delicious . I would definitely visit the place again when I crave for some Chinese food.
Lovely ambience, Great taste of food, serving time is also quick. With Zomato gold offer it’s the best choice for Chinese food. Fair pricing for the dishes as well. Staff is also very good and welcoming.
Had heard lots of good feedback from friends and colleagues. Finally got opportunity to visit them and they did not disappoint me. Tried Pan Fried Chicken Dumpling , Chilli Chicken and Chicken Fried Rice. All dishes were good. Service was excellent and they take care of customers well.

Had visited this place for the first time yesterday and can say that we had made the right choice. The service was very good. The food was perfecto. We had Chinese Chopsuey PAN Fried Noodles Chicken in Hot Garlic and Fish in the schezwan style. All items were very tasty. They were very attentive to what we want and always at our service.

Myself and my wife visited this restaurant in October. Both the food and service was excellent. Worth for the money you spent. We plan to visit again in December. Will recommend this restaurant to my friends and relatives.
Great Chinese food, but a bit expensive and on top of that they add the 20% taxes even on home delivery which I don’t get if I was not served in the resturant
Absolute satisfaction after my lunch there on a Friday afternoon. Staff was very polite , even though we stayed long after lunch time was done. Diane, Kareen and Vanessa performed an outstanding service!
A restaurant that we have been going since I was a kid. They have undergone some changes recently. They have added a live music bar style area to the restaurant. Their service is amazing and quality of food is great. We have tried almost everything on their menu. I love their dim sums, Kung pao chicken, Hakka noodles... the list is endless. Their restaurant is clean and well decorated. Good place to go with family.
Perfect place to go to for a casual Chinese dinner or for any occasion as well. The fact that it's licensed makes it even better! Been here a couple of times and have always enjoyed my food. However, this service could be improved as it is pretty slow.

I’ve been to Shanghai Surprise multiple times for occasions like birthdays and anniversaries. I wouldn’t be there so many times if their food was anything less than tremendous.

A lot of people recommended this place to me, and I finally got a chance to try it. Twice!
The 1st Time was absolutely fantastic - had the hot and sour soup, king pao chicken and pan smeared noodles along with a few appetizers. They also serve you complimentary prawn crackers in the beginning.
The 2nd time left something to be desired. They changed the layout and the entrance now has more high tables. The kitchen also is closed now versus the glass windows they had earlier. We ordered the duck, chicken appetizers, and another chicken dish with noodles. Except for the appetizers, we weren’t too pleased with the other dishes. We had to order some fried rice just to make up for it and cleanse our palate.
All said and done, if you’re looking for a bit more authentic style Chinese, you should try this out. I definitely would like to come back again one more time because I feel the 2nd visit was probably an exception.

This is my favorite Chinese joint , the Nasi gurae being my favorite, the chicken skewers , rice, noodles , dynamite prawns , chicken chili and Manchurian are my favorites... the whole family loves to eat here... lovey experience..!!
the best hang out and foody place to be with family and friends . the staffs are very polite and informative about the dishes on the menu . we have tryed almost all of their signature dishes my fav should be chicken satay , chicken with peanuts and red chilly , prawns dynamite, sea food soup and the list goes on .
I was impressed by the way they have brought an idea to change the resto into bar after 10 pm .

This is long overdue review! I’ll try to be more consistent with my reviews here on. First and foremost before you decide to dine in here make sure you take a cab especially if you are heading there at night, to find a parking is almost impossible and valet parking is 30dhs!
We’ve been frequenting this place for years and food never tends to disappoints you! In starters, the chicken satay is a must try and even their mixed dumplings 🥟 which is portion of prawns chicken and vegetables.
On the main course you could make it simple after that lovely starters , a portion of fried rice and chicken Manchurian gravy is good and light.
Also you could keep sipping some jasmine tea in between all this to keep your tummy light and good.
If you love pan Asian , this place is must try.

Had the Hakka recipe of beef strips to start of our food and this was my favorite for the night. The meat was perfectly cooked and soft unlike other places where it's chewy. It was spicy as well which made me love it even more!
For mains we had fried rice, Kung Pao chicken and the chicken with broccoli dish. Kung Pao being better than the other but still all good and worth trying. Quantities very really fair for 3 people to share and also for a take away 😋
The ambience was lovely and I also got a birthday surprise cake from them. Really friendly staff and prompt service. A good birthday dinner indeed 😊 thank you!

We ordered the Hakka chicken dry for starters which was delicious and chicken Hakka noodles, fried rice and Manchurian chicken for the main. Rice and manchurian were average. The noodles and Hakka chicken are a must try. For dessert we ordered fried ice cream. Quantity isn't what you'd expect but it isn't bad to end the meal. Overall, a little pricey but worth a try.
After my move to AUH, I so understand why this place will be my favorite chinese eatery. This place has been a favorite to my in-laws during their stint in UAE. If you would love to tickle to taste buds and make your stomach happy with some good food of Chinese, Thai, and other far east cuisine, this is the must place to visit. Although alcohol is served, it's a family and kid friendly place. The staff, servers and chefs take extra care to cook food right and serve when toddlers and children accompany. Vegetarians will not be disappointed too. It's rare to find a place in AUH where vegetarians can have their beverage fix with a plethora of options to eat. Being a vegetarian, I always feel spoiled with choices.
Been my most favourite chinese restaurant for a while now. Its a traditional go-to restaurant for birthday treats in the family. Their chicken sauté and hakka noodles is my all time favourite. Their traditional and complementary prawn fries are just the best. Their soups are good too. The ambience and staff is very nice and pleasant as well.
Visited this place for the first time. Food was sumptuous. Ordered Chicken chilly and Chicken lettuce wraps,both the dishes tickled my taste buds(Wraps to be tried with their condiments). Price for alcohol was reasonable. Tried some chicken entree with their fried rice. Sizzling brownie as dessert was a perfect way to end our meal. Tin took great care of us. Friendly staff,Good ambience and value for money.

They are right. Best Chinese outside China!!, dynamite shrimp taste yummy. But the best of the best is beef sizzler. It was heaven. Beef was so tender and juicy. I highly recommend it. We had it with egg fried rice which also taste good.
listen brother, I come from Los Angeles CaliforniaI where we have a whole city on its own called China town with over a hundred Chinese Restarunt's runned by original Chinese families, and I'm telling you man this is Authentic food right here. One of the best in town if not the best.
My first try was today and I had the deep fried hamaki prawn noodle and prawn garlic chili with chicken spring roll. For a started.

Yum yum yum! One of the best Chinese food in town. Reasonably priced with good drinks options. The best time is to go and come back before 10:30pm. Parking is a big big issue and guess what valet charges 35 dhirams.
I've eaten here thrice over the past year. On all 3 visits, I found the place immaculately maintained, the staff pleasant & the food tasty. They begin you off with prawn crackers, kimchi & condiments. The menu items are divided into Classic China, Modern China & Beyond China - which I think is real smart. Proteins are divided page wise & there's also a dedicated vegetarian section! I've tried their satay, prawn & mushroom dynamite, jiaozi dumplings, fried rice et.c. A very nice restaurant, overall!

Been to this restaurant twice and hence had to write this review, one of the very good chinese restaurants in town with the Best service on offer. They were so much enthusiastic to ensure that our dining experience is not just simple but awesome. My 6 yr old daughter enjoyed all the affection by the staff. With regards to the food, we ordered Chicken Manchow soup which was very delicious, for starter we ordered the fried chicken cooked with peanuts and chillies in Schezwan sauce, although we expected it to be very spicy but it was not spicy and even my daughter enjoyed the chicken chunks. For main course we ordered the chicken manchurian and Schezwan fried rice, the portion was very good and tasted delicious.
We were too full to have any desserts ....one more thing the prawn crackers were a big hit with my daughter ....

I love this place's food so much that i want to eat out here every celebration / excuse i get. Everything you order here will be great. Still my favourite is the black bean sauce that is served at the table.... Haven't found a replacement for it anywhere else. Staff is just the right amount of friendly too! Yayy
This restaurant had an ad outside saying “best Chinese restaurant outside China”, so we had to try it. It is located in Al Diar Capitol Hotel. The place was amazing with fine dining area and extensive menu. The service was incredibly friendly, food fresh and was extremely delicious, price little on the higher side.
We(me and family) love to eat here and we dine in every month :)

By far the best chinese experience... the soup, the shumai & the main course was flawless.
When it comes to dessert the Fried Ice Cream is a must try on thee other hand the sizziling brownie was a bit of a turn off!

Well, for making my husbands day 100% special thats a 5/5. however i need to be honest with the dishes that we ordered. The chopsuey noodles was superb. The duck is good, the shanghai as appetizer was great. The sweet and spicy chx was a no no for me. It seems ordinary, nothing special. Not a balance of sweet and sour. The mafo do fu or the tofu with beef is not good. It could have been better if its a slice of beef with bigger tofu sauted kung pao style. Not mince beef with reaaly small slice of tofu. Its not value for money though taste is good. Btw, service is fantastic as well as the crew.
A great little Chinese place tucked away inside the Diar Mina in a corner of Abu Dhabi. Great service and a kitchen with a view. The Manchurian style chicken and Hakka noodles are favourites along with pretty much anything off the menu.
One of the very few chinese restaurant which has that authentic taste in their food. i have been to this place several times with different sets of ppl to enjoy the food and we have never been disappointed.
I tried the hot and sour soup, chicken manchow soup , the thai red chicken curry , the prawn and scallop satay , chicken steam dumpling , roasted crispy duck ; almond chicken cashew nut curry , fried icecream. Unfortunately i dont have much of pics. the dishes that i loved the most was the manchow soup, duck, dumpling , satay. Each of them were reallly yummy and fresh. Once the order is placed they serve a vegetable salad which is spicy, hot and yummmy.. Thats one of their specialities.
For me, this place adds to the places for repeated visit in my list. I would always recommend people to go and try the varieties there. In love with each of the dishes.

Visited this place for an office lunch , the place has an old China look to it . The complimentary prawn crackers were really nice, liked the black bean .We ordered crispy fried chicken which was nice but a bit more sweeter than expected. The fried rice chicken with spring onion was good. The Hakka noodles was also good.
Over all the experience was satisfactory as I expected it to be an authentic Chinese restaurant , but it was more an Indo Chinese restaurant .

Have been to this place a few times with friends and fmaily and enjoyed it all the time. The cocktails are perfect, the mocktails have nice flavors. They have a lot of options for vegetarians which is why this is my most favorite Chineses place. The soups taste really yummy so are our favorites springrolls, steamed Jiaozi (dumplings ohh so soft) or the crispy corns.
Many options in main course with different variety of veggies in dry or gravy, their sweet and sour or sichuan sauce, both taste nice. Lot of choices to go with the curry like noddles, rice, choupsey or sizzlers even.
The ambience is good, there is aa lot of space, and the staff is very courteous with a smile on their face. Impressed with the service. Great going Shanghai Surprise, you are my all time favorite for chinese.

Had heard a lot about this place especially from my colleague at work. So finally I made it to the place, it is at a convenient location and well decorated with a good overall ambience. The staff were really very nice from the time we entered till we left, very helpful, accommodating & friendly. Before we could order we were served with some prawn crackers, crisp & nice. We went for a proper 3 course meal, for starters we ordered Dynamite Prawns & Chicken Hakka Dry and it was yumm! Then the main we decided some basic with Chicken Fried Rice & Chicken Manchurian, the taste was ok but not as great as the starters. Finally for dessert we ordered a Fried Ice Cream, wow it looked really nice and tasted good. Plus had some juices which was freshly made & was refreshing. I feel the food portion is slightly less compared to the price which is on the higher side. I rated it 4.5 for the total experience, the food I would say 4.0 or 4.2. However, we had a good time & will surely visit again. So try it out, I'm sure it will be good treat.

I visited Shanghai Surprise after reading all the reviews here. Thankfully parking was not a hassle on Friday. The place however was bustling and full of (noisy) people. Felt right at home (in India) :D
We met the aforementioned Jennifer, and she was as described. The food was a mixed bag of interesting and not so interesting items. All items that we ordered were tasty and more than enjoyable, but none had that "Wow!" factor. A very safe approach by the place, I must say.
The facility of having a bar adds to the value for sure, since nothing like a good beer on the weekend. Draught options are only Fosters though.
I will surely be visiting again, but perhaps to try more of the soups and other options. Some ingredients were fresh, while most of us observed that there was a distinct smell to the oil used for cooking. Could probably just be old, but surprised that they would not change it for the weekend.
Quick tip - They do offer discounts/coupons/Groupon etc. So call in advance and see what your options are. With 4 beers, 3 starters, 3 main course and a mocktail, our bill was around 360 (excluding tip). Not bad.
Just need to see past the reception of the hotel, the old musky interiors. Service was prompt, friendly and sharp. You can't go too wrong, if you've got this spot on.
It has been 4-5months since we discovered this restau on Zomato. And have been there atleast 10 times..thats how much we love the food and ambience there. The setup is minimalistic yet atmosphere is very cheerful as the staff is always smiling and ready to help you out. The food is outstanding and the presentation is great. If you are an ardent fan of this place is a must try . Light on the pocket as well. The sweetest part is the staff do accomodate your request for some customization in the dishes, which is great. A great place to unwind with some good food
Probably one of the better Chinese restaurants in Abu Dhabi. The ambiance is nice offers a view of the city which is good. The service is prompt. The food is authentic, loved the steamed dim sums, not many places in Abu Dhabi serve this dish, hence a relief. The portions were good for 2-3 people. If looking for simple wholesome Chinese cuisine amidst a cacophony of Lebanese, Middle Eastern and Konkan food then this is the place to be. And last but not the least this place has a bar if that is of any interest. Coming from Calcutta the cradle of Chinese cuisine in India I recommend this joint for Chinese food in the desert sands. My rating of this place : 4.0 .

Shanghai surprise did surprise us by billing us extra for what we had not ordered. Thumbs up for the authentic Chinese dishes they serve though.
A home delivery review may not do full justice but anyways thought of posting it. The order consisted of pan fried chicken dumpling , kung pao chicken,prawns in hot garlic sauce, vegetable noodles, chicken fried rice and Sichuan prawn fried rice. The delivery came complete with complimentary crackers which was good and crispy. The pan fried chicken dumpling had the right blend of flavours . Being an Indian , this Chinese was more to our taste rather than an authentic Chinese but I like it this way. The kung pao chicken was the best of the lot with cashew nuts and we thoroughly enjoyed . Thou we ordered prawns in hot garlic sauce ...it was sweet which did not make sense thou it tasted quite good. Both the rice was good to taste..but found the vegetable Hakka noodle a bit soggy.
Maybe a dine in will be my next option to try more varieties.
Overall a good Chinese meal to enjoy.

Excellent food. We order quite a lot in fact as the menu seemed to be very tempting. We also order fresh lime soda and pina colada which were great too. Overall a very good experience. However I was not very happy with the interior and apprach of the hotel as well as resturants. It's high time they should re decorate
