When I received an invite from Al Dar Sweets, my excitement knew no bounds as I had a sweet tooth and I drooled over Arabic and Oriental sweets. I dreamt of Baklawa, Kunafa, Basbousa, Mamoul for a couple of days and with that in mind and Ruth Reichi words of "Pull up a chair, take a taste, come join us, life is so endlessly sweet"....resounding in my ears, I eagerly walked into Al Dar Sweets.
Located just behind Kalyan Silks & Pan Emirates Furniture at Airport Road, this cozy little Sweet Shop was established in 1975 and is a family run business that has been a successful manufacturer of Arabic Sweet Treats in the Area, especially to high end Hotels and Restaurants in the region. They have a 500 Sq. Meter facility at Mussafah, where all their sweets are made and supplied to their high end clientele, which include but not limited to Emirates Palace and most five-star properties in UAE.
We were warmly greeted by the Owner's son, Mr. Wissam El Cheikh Hassan, a graduate from a Canadian University, young, modern and with fresh new ideas. He was well aware that their Arabic Sweets already had created a niche and a place in the Area. He wanted to bring a new concept to Al Dar Sweets, of Arabic delicacies, mainly their breakfast items of Baked Eggs, Manakish, Pastries and the like. Right now their new concept catered to all-day-long breakfast which was freshly made in their Stone Oven, right in front of the Customer. They also had freshly brewed organic Ethopian Arabic Coffee and various Tea and in--house made Ice-Creams in various flavours (Pistacho, Lemon, Mango, Strawberry, Berry, Vanilla, Chocolate and Kashta).
We feasted our eyes on the lovely sweets and became a sweet-gawker as we eyed all the lovely Arabic Sweets on display and our cameras went click-click non-stop. Mr. Wissam proudly mentioned that if you ate any good Arabic Sweets in Abu Dhabi, chances that they could be from Al Dar are very very high. We had an opportunity to meet with Mr. Wissam's father too, who started Al Dar Sweets in 1975 in a modest manner. He was an ever smiling gentleman, humble to the core, who regaled us with stories about his many jaunts to Mumbai, (Colaba to be precise), which happened to be our home-town, and we in turn told him of stories of our visit to his home-town far away, where he was no longer permitted to go.
Al Dar Sweets had an eye-catching huge Slate Board, with their Menu written in chalk and I noted that their prices were reasonable. It consisted of various type of Manakish, Pizza, Pastries, Croissants, their all day-breakfast Menu and of course their Tea/Coffee and Ice Creams. We were informed that their Main-Dishes are in the planning stages and would shortly be introduced.
We tried their Cheese, Zaatar and Sujok Manakish and the Spinach Fatayer and they were freshly made in front of us and came steaming hot straight to our Table from the Stone Oven. They were absolutely divine and were served with fresh home-made cream and salad. The baked eggs were nice as well, served in a cute little saucepan. Good presentation. I loved their Mini bread also freshly made, puffed up and even could eat them plain without any dip.
We tasted some of their organic Ice creams and they really caught our attention. I liked the Kashta Ice cream the best.
We were glad to note their Mom made a couple of Sugarfree Sweets, and we tasted their Sugar-free Semolina Mamoul and Maqtoora, which were truly delicious. Considering that the current generation is on the health band-wagon, this is one item on their Menu that will surely become popular and it came as no surprise to us when Mr. Wissam confirmed that it was one of their hot selling items.
Their Arabic Sweets looked amazing and if I had to review them I would surely rate them as A +. It was astounding to note that they had various types of Kunafa, (Na'ameh, Kishnen Nabulsiye, Othmaliye, Maghoosheh, Nabulsiye Roll and Kunafa Kaakeh).
I secretly prayed that I would taste their Kunafa, Mamoul and those eye-catching Pistachio Sweets; but that did not happen and we had to be content with their Breakfast Menu and organic Ice-creams. We were given a goody bag of a few of their dairy based sweets, sugarless sweets and couple of Arabic sweets; and they were indeed very good.
If you are looking for Arabic Sweets in Abu Dhabi, I recommend you look nowhere else, but blindly walk into Al Dar Sweets and you will be content, that is guaranteed.
