I am finally back from my foodie trip to Malaysia! Ok, so it wasn't just a foodie trip as I was there to see family and friends, but it always ends up being a fabulous foodie journey, anyway. :)
When I got back earlier in the week, I found three Zomato coupons on my desk (My first ones ever. YEAH!!!), one of which was for Shezon Bakery & Cafe worth aed100. I saw their menu here on zomato showing that they had a delicious-sounding breakfast menu, so I called up a friend and invited her to go eat brunch there with me.
First of all, directions aren't very good on Zomato; the map wouldn't even open up for me. Next, following the written directions weren't terribly helpful either, as Shezon is NOT next to RAK Bank; it's about 4 buildings towards the back of RAK Bank, past Lazeez Coshari (which I hear is really good) so best to call them for directions once you get to RAK Bank.
Secondly, when we arrived there, we found this cute, clean little cafe, but NO BREAKFAST SERVED. First, we thought it was because we had arrived past breakfast hours, but no, they informed us that they had stopped serving breakfast as they had not received a license to be a restaurant until the day before we came. So, now that they have the license, they are in the midst of making their new menu, so if you're looking for a sit-down breakfast, or breakfast of any kind, come back in a month's time, when they will have their new menu in place, and a new dining set-up with more tables and chairs.
So, we were disappointed on that count. Then, Miss Joy and Chef Nestor explained what they did still serve, which were the mini sandwiches, tortilla fajitas, and the cakes and sweet confectioneries on display. According to the menu (one of three) that they did have, one had to order a minimum of 12 sandwiches/fajitas/truffles. So, I asked if this was truly the case, i.e., what if we only wanted to order 8, or 2 or whatever number. They explained that for dine-in customers, that would indeed be possible.
After all this confusion, which lasted for about 10 minutes, Miss Joy sat at the table next to us, and with pen and paper, patiently took our order and answered our questions as we asked what each food item contained.
Finally, the food arrived, and thankfully, it made up for all the earlier time-consuming confusion and disappointment that they weren't serving any breakfast for another month.
We had fun ordering all sorts of items to use up the aed100 voucher. We ordered the following sandwiches: Chicken Coronation, Feta Cheese, Spicy Chicken, Beef Burger, Chicken Burger, Hawaiian Tortilla Fajita, Chicken Fajita, Beef Fajita, and 2 types of Bread Bowl (forgot the names!). The bread used for the sandwiches and bread bowls was potato bread which held together well, and was very moist. There wasn't a single item we didn't like, in that they were all well-flavoured and fresh. The tortilla fajitas were favourites for all three of us (yes, I took 4 sandwiches/tortillas to hubby at work, and he loved all of them!). They were filled with juicy, flavourful meats and freshly stir-fried onions and bell peppers of three colours.
We also had assorted truffles to try (Kit Kat, Bounty, pistachio, lotus, Kinder, and Ferrero, Oreo) -- again, all were tasty and rich. You really can't eat more than 2 or 3 truffles at a time. Ok, maybe some of you can, but I can't, without feeling 'mual' (that wonderful Malay which describes a heavy, cloying feeling).
Verdict? The service and the food (easily a 4.5) saved the day, especially after the difficulty of finding the place, then not getting breakfast, and no drinks except for Nescafe and Lipton tea served (they were kind enough to give me a glass of water, and their full menu will include many more drinks.)
Now you just have to wait a month for their full dining menu and dining furniture to turn up!
