I've never been to Blue Ocean Seafood, and I'm increasingly becoming one of those bloggers who prefers to sit in the comfort of their home and review food.
Now that's not bad per se, but you tend to miss out on details that make a meal fantastic: for e.g. the ambience, the music, the layout, the service etc. Sometimes these things contribute to you having a good EXPERIENCE. And that's what you will often miss out when you eat at home.
When one usually eats at home, you will use superlatives like delicious, tasty etc. However Blue Ocean Seafood will expand your culinary vocabulary, since they not only feed you through your mouth, but your eyes as well.
Ordering from this place will make you think of the texture of the food, the ideal temperature of the food, the subtle flavors you will experience. All in all, this adds to a really enjoyable experience. Go through the pictures I've posted and you'll see what I mean. From the packaging to the naming of the dish, most of the things seem to be well thought out of. Notice I said...Most of the things...yes, that means they do have a few misses despite their hits. I'm going to go into it dish for dish
Soup: Blue Ocean Soup/Chef's Special (Highly recommended) - This is a thick, creamy seafood soup with subtle flavors. The first time you try it out, you'll want to reach out for flavoring condiments, but I'd stop you right there. As you keep going through it, you'll start to enjoy the subtle seafood flavors. You'll get a giant shrimp in it (head and all) and a delicate piece of crab (refer to pic) plus smaller pieces of shrimp. By far the best seafood soup I've tasted. You won't go wrong with it, since it is the Chef's Special. Full marks to this dish.
Shrimp Soup - This was rather underwhelming. Shrimps in a soup; what could possibly go wrong? A lot apparently. The subtle flavors are muted here and if you did throw in salt and pepper to flavor your soup, I wouldn't stop you this time. 5 out 10 points to this one.
After this experience I've generally stuck to the Chef's Special in each category (with a few exceptions as you'll see soon). Portions are good in size and enough for one person only
Appetizers: Large Mussels - Unfortunately, the appetizers don't have a Chef's Special to guide you by, and so I had to sample two of their dishes, and this one is the better of the two. They are indeed large mussels that are steamed with pickled veggies. The flavors are decent and broth has too much of a pickle flavor for me to enjoy. Go ahead for the experience it will give you; if you've done mussels before I'd give it a miss. 7 out of 10.
Shrimp Cocktail - A largely bland experience, this one. Tasteless shrimp tossed in a salad that adds no flavor to the dish at all. The sauces provided are standard salad thoroughfare (mustard, ranch etc.) But even they cannot salvage this dish. I'd largely avoid this. 4 out of 10.
Portions are decent, and as appetizers go, usually two can share what one person would want to eat.
Pasta: Shrimp Pasta - The restaurant only does spaghetti versions of pasta and that may disappoint some of the penne and fusili freaks out there. This was so bland that I had to flavor it with salt and pepper myself. Seriously underwhelming. 4 out of 10.
Blue Ocean Pasta/Chef's Special - You see the trend now, don't you? Usually, the chef's special is a guaranteed hit! Go for this one and you won't be disappointed. A mixture of shrimp, crab, calamari, squid, this pasta has better flavors and only misses a delicate hit of pepper. That can be easily remedied, but I wish they had other options than spaghetti. 7 out of 10.
The pastas come in two varieties: Red sauce and white. I'm a white sauce fan, so I opted for white in both cases. Portions are generous here, and two can easily eat one serving.
Tajeen Pot: For those unfamiliar with tagine (that's the actual spelling), it's an African way of preparing a dish in an earthen pot. A mixture of spices and sauces that is cooked in an earthen pot. A literal melting pot of various ingredients.
Seafood Tajeen/Chef's Special - I've only tried the Chef's Special in this category and thank god for that! The seafood tajeen is excellent! Great flavors and the sauce is thick and delicious. They give you traditional baked rotis to go with it and it makes for a great complement to the dish. Crab, shrimp and calamari are among the spices and the seafood ingredients are generous. You might want to finish up the dish in one go though, since once it cools down the sauce congeals and the flavors are lost. 9 out of 10 points.
Portion is good and 2 can easily eat out of one pot.
Biryani Pot: Blue Ocean Pot/Chef's Special - Yep, biryani cooked in the same way a tagine would. I've only tried this dish and it has not failed to impress. A delicate balance of spices with flavorful rice and lots of seafood pieces inside. 8 out of 10
Portions are good and good enough for two.
Ocean Fruits: Crab - I didn't opt for the more expensive varieties in this category and instead went for the crab. You have various ways of preparing the dish (grill, barbecue, fry) and I went for the grill. The dish was wrapped like a gift plate and that is truly delightful. Upon opening it, you find 4 decent sized crabs grilled to perfection and garnished with a squeeze of lime. The flavors are nice and crispy and makes for a good experience with family around the table. True value for money as the price is only 70 dhs.
At the end of this review, I have to mention a few other points too. Packaging is fantastic. Every dish makes you want to look at it since they come in really well packed plasticware. The cardboard boxes have a pleasing look and there's ample of cutlery that has been sent with each dish. Every dish is like eye candy for you and that contributes to the way you eat. Very few restaurants send their food packed, so that you can show off in front of guests. Most use sub standard items that will send you running into your kitchen for better crockery to display the food in.
A small negative is the absence of condiments provided. Salt and pepper sachets are a must, one cannot do without it.
The seafood is always fresh, the portions are generous and the delivery man is very polite and hospitable. Food does take some time reach you though (an hour, minimum) so decide accordingly before ordering. You don't want to wait while your stomach keeps growling.
I'm sure a visit to the restaurant itself will yield better results, but I'm happy enough to order at home and recommend this place to others, as this impresses a lot.
