‪new Times Restaurant‬

Fantastic Dim Sum, is only provided on Friday morning. Very authentic Cantonese or HongKong Dim Sum. Tasty! Yummy! And the portion is larger than normal in HongKong. Definitely will come again.

This restaurant serves excellent, authentic Chinese-Chinese food…as opposed to Indo-Chinese food and/or Fusion-Chinese food. Styled in the same grand fashion as so many restaurants in mainland China, you’d be excused for thinking you were actually in China – in fact, for a minute I thought the girls at the front desk were going to ask me to show them my visa. My fellow foodie and I were the only non-Chinese in the restaurant throughout the time we were there.

In keeping with what seems to be the norm of such restaurants in China, there are a number of private rooms upstairs which can be hired out for groups, romantic couples and paranoid individuals. Adding further to the general Asian ambiance is a wall made up of aquariums of fish, crab, lobsters and other creatures of the deep. Absolutely brilliant.

On being seated you are presented with a large, super glossy menu (thankfully) full of pictures of the dozens of dishes on offer – most of which will be totally alien to you (as they were to me) – but all with little English subtitles no doubt courtesy of Google Translate – so keep the menu after you’ve ordered to amuse yourself with until your food arrives. It really is a hoot. You also have bowls of cold, cooked peanuts and tofu strips put on the table as complementary starters. The peanuts are amazing…and addictive. And there’s nothing else on the table – no salt, pepper, chilli sauce, soy sauce – nothing but chop sticks. Hmm.

We were ultra conservative when ordering, sticking to the things we knew or recognised such as the stir-fried chilli chicken, stir-fried noodles with shredded potato (and something else which I can’t remember), and stir-fried baby spinach – and before anyone says anything yes, I realise everything was stir-fried. What can I say, we panicked a little. I leave adventure to when I have a Chinese companion who can help with the ordering…and communicating. Thankfully everything we ordered was simply fantastic and both of us ate heartily. Portion sizes are HUGE. We could comfortably have fed another two with the same amount of food and still have had some left over – thank goodness for take home parcels – waste not, want not my Gran always said.

Service was a little confusing as the majority of the staff do not understand English nor does sign work beyond drinking from an imaginary glass – I want a drink, and writing in the air with an imaginary pen – bill please. So we had to wait for one of the Pilipino girls to show up to get what we wanted. This turned out to be a little bit of a challenge as the staff rushed about attending to the steady stream of Chinese tourists which an obvious contract kept bring in and taking out. But once they understood what we wanted everything was chop chop quick.

Hey, but everyone understood us loud and clear once food was put on our table – Mmm means the same just about everywhere – with or without Google Translate.

The interior is amazing, entrance is grand and the staff is very accommodating. They have a private room which add on to the service they offer(min. 699 on total bill). The only thing I don't like is the plastic cup that they used for tea I prefer the porcelain or the glass one.

If your looking for authentic Chinese resto New times is the place to dine, they have plenty of table and the resto is huge ( they have second floor for privet room).

The price is reasonable compare to the quality and portion (a whole duck cost AED99, include all the sides, bread and sweet sauce). The atmosphere is excellent and good for business gatherings. Highly recommended. This is my place to go for Peking duck.
