I am on a roll here... Again a cheap restaurant worth visiting.
The first (negative and positive) thing is- they are really catering to Chinese. The menu? Chinese only! The waitress? Chinese... and spoke very little English- still very helpful. Fortunately the menu shows pictures from all dishes, and you can still use Google Translate 😃
I only opted for some stir fried crispy chicken with chili Szechuan style. Some rice. And braised cabbage.
First thing, I received a complimentary tea. Not necessary the best tea (it was a bag)- but at no means something to complain at! Far better restaurants are using tea bags at times even less authentic ones!
The food (chicken and the rice) came quite fast- I was first off all a bit disappointed- as authenticity goes, the chicken was hacked in very small pieces, with bones and cartilage! However as it was so perfectly crispy, I could even eat the bones. So it wasn't that bad and a point for authenticity. The crispness and overall taste gave it even a character which reminded me on crispy fried duck! While it was for sure spicy, the hotness was not overbearing and was amazingly complex- some chili, some anise flavors came out and the unique aroma of Szechuan peppers were also prevalent. Chefs of Chinese restaurants in 5* hotels should definitely visit this place to relearn authentic Chinese aromatic!
The cabbage was almost better... Came on a small gel-flame stove and simmered away... With tender chicken, some ginger... Sweet and delicious!
Portions were really good- would have been shareable!
Verdict: if you are close to international city (tip: go to the Chinese supermarkets there, which have a lot of unseen products and really cheap and fresh produce)- you should visit this gem! It is like making a culinary journey to China, without flight and the need for packing...
